Compare the Kaplan lift-top and Taylor round coffee tables on function, space planning, and style to decide which fits your living room seating.
Quick answer
Choose the Kaplan Coffee Table with Lift Top if you want a table that doubles as a work or dining surface; choose the Taylor Round Coffee Table if you want a warm, durable wood piece that keeps traffic flowing around living room seating.
Why the lift-top mechanism changes daily use
The Kaplan's defining feature is its lift top, which raises the surface toward you for eating, typing, or reading without leaning forward. That makes it a better match for a sofa you use for both lounging and working. The trade-off is mechanical: a lift-top table generally has more parts than a fixed-top table, so it rewards gentle, centered lifting and a clear path for the top to rise. The Taylor has no moving parts, so its appeal is simplicity rather than adjustability.
Round shape and space planning
A round table like the Taylor has no corners to catch a knee or hip, which helps in compact seating arrangements or rooms with a walkway on one side. It also softens a boxy sofa-and-armchair layout. The trade-off is surface efficiency: a round top offers less usable edge area for remotes, books, and drinks than a rectangular top of similar footprint, so you may need a side table or tray to keep clutter controlled.
Materials and finish: what the catalog tells you
The Taylor is built with durable Acacia solids and a brushed light oak veneer finish, which gives it a soft matte look with natural grain character. That construction is a good fit for a warm, traditional or transitional room. The Kaplan's catalog description emphasizes flexibility across the collection rather than a specific wood or finish, so if material matching is critical, treat the Kaplan as a style decision to confirm in person or with swatches rather than a guaranteed match to the Taylor's acacia-and-oak story.
Trade-offs to weigh before you buy
- Function vs simplicity: The Kaplan's lift top adds a working surface but introduces a mechanism; the Taylor's fixed top is simpler but offers no height adjustment. If anyone in the home will regularly work or eat at the coffee table, the lift top earns its complexity.
- Shape vs surface area: The Taylor's round top eases traffic flow and softens corners; a rectangular lift-top like the Kaplan gives more usable edge space for shared items. Measure your walkway first: if a corner would jut into a path, favor round.
- Material certainty: The Taylor specifies Acacia solids and a brushed light oak veneer; the Kaplan's catalog entry does not list a comparable wood or finish, so confirm it against your floor and other furniture. Request a finish sample or check the Kaplan in person if exact wood matching matters.
